As one of the top free agents on the market, the Maple Leafs might have a leg up on Jack Roslovic, whose link to the club goes deeper than we originally thought.
The free agent pool remains shallow today with most of the top-tier free agents no longer on the market. However, Jack Roslovic is one player in particular that the Toronto Maple Leafs have shown continued interest in.
The interest is believed to be a two-way street with Roslovic open to joining the Leafs and part of that is to play on the same team as former teammate Auston Matthews after the two of them spent some time together at the U.S. National Development Program, according to insider Elliotte Friedman.
"It makes sense to me because he has a history with Auston Matthews, they played together at the U.S. National Development team. So I could see this connection."
Friedman also mentions that Roslovic is more willing to wait on the Leafs moving out a body or two, like Calle Jarnkrok or David Kampf, unlike some of other free agent targets like Andrew Mangiapane, who was not interested in waiting for an offer from his hometown club.
"I think one of the reasons the Leafs didn't get Mangiapane was because they kind of indicated we have to move some bodies out, and Mangiapane didn't want to wait. So far, it looks like at least for now, Roslovic is waiting."
While that link is a good barometer into why Roslovic might still be available, Max Domi is another forward that the 28-year-old free agent has played alongside in the past that could push the needle even more for the Leafs.
Domi and Roslovic spent parts of 2 seasons together in Columbus between 2020-22, before the former was traded to Carolina ahead of the trade deadline. They had a solid bit of chemistry, especially in 2021-22, as evidenced by the goal shown below.
With a void in the top-6 remaining from Mitch Marner's departure, Roslovic could conceivably slide into a top-6 spot, and he could even potentially start with former teammate Max Domi in the hopes of rekindling some chemistry there.
