After days of back and forth discussions, Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman has confirmed that Mitch Marner has been traded to the Vegas Golden Knights.
Maple Leafs GM Brad Treliving confirmed on Thursday, just ahead of the 2025 NHL Entry Draft on the weekend, that Mitch Marner and the Leafs were very likely headed towards a split. Now, it has come to fruition.
According to Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman, Marner is now officially a member of the Vegas Golden Knights.
What the real surprising part of this deal is is that Marner was originally expected to sign a 4-year extension upon completion of the deal. Instead, however, the Leafs signed Marner to a 8-year extension and then shipped him to the Golden Knights, per TSN's Darren Dreger.
As it turns out, the AAV of the deal, which was originally expected to be 4 years, as previously mentioned, comes in at just $12M -- a mere $1.1M increase, though the fact that Nevada is a tax-free State will help Marner take home a lot more money over the course of the deal.
At this point, the return for Marner is not yet known. The NHL is currently processing the deal during the trade call.
Vegas was originally believed to have tampered with Marner well ahead of the July 1st free agent period, and it is believed that they were more amenable to completing a sign-and-trade with the Maple Leafs to avoid serious tampering charges for both the Golden Knights and Marner himself, which could have included cash fines, the loss of draft picks and potentially even voiding Marner's deal in Vegas.
