Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman has shared Brad Treliving's plans to shake up the Maple Leafs' roster, and the approach he's taking may come as somewhat of a surprise.
In need of a right-shot defenseman, the Leafs claimed former Calgary Flames, Edmonton Oilers and Vancouver Canucks blueliner
Troy Stecher off of waivers on Saturday afternoon.
The move provides the Leafs with another right-handed defenseman in the absence of
Chris Tanev, but is certainly not a long-term fix, but more of a stop-gap solution to the current problem.
During his weekly 'Saturday Headlines' segment during the Saturday night broadcast, Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman revealed that the Leafs and GM Brad Treliving are looking to shake up their roster.
Already limited in draft picks and prospects, Friedman shared that the Leafs are not keen on dealing what they have left in terms of future assets. Instead, they're in search of a good player-for player(s) hockey trade.
"I don't think they want to trade futures... and I include
Easton Cowan in that... What I'm hearing is that they want to make hockey trades -- roster for roster and they are exploring what on their roster has value. We're not talking about the core."
When mentioning the core, Friedman was quick to shoot down Ron McLean's question about
Matthew Knies, indirectly noting that he is now part of the Leafs' new core.
Domi, Carlo On Their Way Out?
For those not considered part of the core group, there may be a few sleepless nights ahead as Treliving figures out who on his roster has value and what that value is.
We know
Max Domi's name has surfaced in recent weeks, as has the now-injured
Brandon Carlo's name, and Treliving had been trying to move
Calle Jarnkrok in earnest for much of the season. Nick Robertson's name is also out there, but his sudden spike in production could have the Leafs second-guessing moving him.
Although fans may want to see the Leafs take a big swing, I have to give credit to Treliving for not being willing or wanting to trade the limited prospects and picks he has left. While winning now is important, setting the team up to also be able to win in the future is a wise decision by a veteran GM.
