Auston Matthews takes aim at Phil Kessel
When the Toronto Maple Leafs take to the ice on Saturday night against the Detroit Red Wings, they'll have a chance to extend their win streak to 3 games. It will be an opportunity to gain some momentum to take into a busy February, where they'll have a good chance to pick up some ground on both the Tampa Bay Lightning and the Florida Panthers.
For
Auston Matthews, however, Saturday night's game against the Red Wings just might end up having a certain significance to it. If Matthews happens to record a point against the Wings, he'll officially move past Phil "The Thrill" Kessel and gain sole possession of the #20 spot in the top-20 for most points in franchise history.
Matthews currently sits at 394 points, as does Kessel, though Matthews has reached that feat in just 370 games played. It took Kessel 446 games to reach that same total.
If Matthews can continue racking up the points at the current pace he's on in the second half of the season, he'll have an outside chance at moving into the top-15 this season. That spot currently belongs to none other than Doug Gilmour, who is 58 points up on Matthews at the moment, racking up 452 points during his time as a Leaf.
Some of the other names that Matthews has the chance to pass this season include Ian Turnbull (414), Syl Apps (432) and Wendel Clark (441).
These are some pretty impressive numbers, especially when you consider that Matthews is in just his 6th NHL season.
