Maple Leafs legend Borje Salming's childhood home and the rink he learned to play hockey on may be lost after decades of mining in his hometown of Kiruna, Sweden
There are few names in the history of the Toronto Maple Leafs that are bigger, or more recognizable than former elite defenseman Borje Salming.
The Hockey Hall of Fame entrant and one of the first European players to make an impact in the NHL, is a legend in Toronto, Canada, and of course, his home country of Sweden.
"It's sad. When we were up there filming the Börje movie, we walked along the streets where we grew up and to the ice rink. It feels sad that it won't be there anymore, but I understand the reasons."
Borje Salming's Brother Delivers Disappointing News about the Maple Leafs Legend's Childhood Home and Rink
Asked what he thought his brother might think about the situation, Stig Salming said he believes Borje would share his feelings on the situation.
Given the history involved, it's surprising the modest home and hockey rink, which Stig called Borje's "second home", weren't turned into notable landmarks following Salming's highly respected and admired career in the NHL. It's unfortunate that they may be lost forever.
