The Maple Leafs are expected to make some serious changes this summer, and GM Brad Treliving could not guarantee contract offers for Mitch Marner or John Tavares during his season-ending press conference.
The Maple Leafs fell short of their goals and expectations this season, and this was one of the main sentiments offered up by Leafs GM Brad Treliving on Thursday as he met with the media to discuss what comes next in Toronto.
Treliving began his day by doing a bit of a timeline from his perspective on some of the key points of the season, stemming back to last summer and the hiring of new head coach Craig Berube, then branching out into some of the blueline and goal acquisitions, touching on the 2024-25 regular season before ultimately re-capping the disappointing post-season exit.
However, it was the comments he made towards the end of the presser that really took centre stage, as highlighted by The Fourth Period's David Pagnotta below. Treliving would not guarantee that the Leafs will even submit an offer to their two top UFAs, Mitch Marner and John Tavares.
"Treliving wouldn't not guarantee a formal contract offer will be presented to either Marner or Tavares. That will be based on the internal evaluation they're going through, and on the discussions he has/continues to have their agents."
Tavares had spoken out last week during locker clear-out day, suggesting that he had already held preliminary talks about a potential extension in Toronto.
Meanwhile, Mitch Marner's body language and beating around the bush suggest that he's about to seek greener pastures on or after July 1st.
