Data Analyst Disrespects Maple Leafs with Blunt Assessment of Off-Season Adjustments
A recent analysis of the Maple Leafs' off-season adjustments paints the team in a very concerning light, but the assessment may not be a fair one.
Maple Leafs GM Brad Treliving is reportedly disappointed that he hasn't landed the top-six forward he is looking for to replace some of the production lost following the departure of Mitch Marner.
Treliving admitted that he wanted to spread Marner's expected salary throughout the lineup, which he has done amicably by acquiring Nicolas Roy, Dakota Joshua and Matias Maccelli.
While Treliving still hunts for a top-six forward, The Athletic's Dom Luszczyszyn has ranked the off-seasons of each team so far and put a lot of stock in what he called a 'Marner-sized hole' on the right side in Toronto.
Luszczyszyn had the Leafs ranked 31st out of 32 teams it terms of their off-season so far, which doesn't sit well with the patrons of Leafs Nation.
"There is a gigantic Mitch Marner-sized hole in the Leafs' forward group that remains unfilled. The Leafs badly needed a true top-six forward to fill that void, but didn't have a lot of options to do so. What they did to get Matias Maccelli and Nicolas Roy was savvy and has bolstered the team's forward depth, but it obviously doesn't come anywhere close to equaling the value Marner brings," wrote Luszczyszyn. "Toronto is now arguably closer to the Ottawa and Montreal tier of the Atlantic than it is to the Florida and Tampa Bay tier."
While that may be true in that the Leafs won't be at the top of the Atlantic Division, Treliving has made the best of a bad situation and appears to be spending his time and money wisely.
The Leafs still have William Nylander, Auston Matthews, Matthew Knies and John Tavares to provide star power, but have been troubled by their depth in the playoffs over the years. With more depth up front, Leafs Nation will gladly take a lower seed in the regular season if it means more playoff success at this point.
