Update on Oilers Captain Connor McDavid Not Sitting Well with Maple Leafs Fans

One longstanding NHL rumour has been the possibility of the league's most talented player, Connor McDavid, eventually returning to his hometown to play for the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Earlier this offseason, there were no extension talks between McDavid and the Edmonton Oilers, a development that fueled speculation among Maple Leafs fans who would welcome him to Toronto with open arms. That was then, and this is now.

This week, NHL insider Frank Seravalli provided an update on McDavid's contract situation with the Oilers, as reported by NHL Rumour Report on X:

McDavid was also spotted in Toronto this offseason, most notably playing in a beer league game alongside teammate Leon Draisaitl -- an appearance that went viral when he was spectacularly stopped in close by a beer league goalie.

Also, over the years, McDavid has developed a strong friendship and healthy rivalry with Maple Leafs captain Auston Matthews, with the two seen training together in the offseason.

This friendship added fuel to the fire for Maple Leafs fans, as the potential of a Matthews-McDavid 1-2 combo at centre was too good not to fantasize about.

While McDavid may not be wearing a Maple Leafs jersey in the immediate future, the NHL has seen stranger things happen. After all, another Canadian superstar -- widely considered the greatest player of all time in Wayne Gretzky -- was traded during his career. In hockey, anything is possible.
