TSN insider Chris Johnston shared an update on talks between the Edmonton Oilers and Connor McDavid that has triggered speculation he may come home to the Maple Leafs next summer.
Days after the Edmonton Oilers lost their second straight Stanley Cup Final to the Florida Panthers, Oilers GM Stan Bowman was asked about opening extension talks with captain Connor McDavid.
McDavid is entering the final year of his contract that has a $12.5M cap hit and has been eligible to sign an extension since July 1st.
Chris Johnston Provides Update on Connor McDavid Extension Talks, and It's Good News for the Maple Leafs
On Tuesday, TSN's Chris Johnston made an appearance on 'The Steve Dangle Podcast' where he discussed the latest news from around the NHL. One of the things the group touched on during discussions was regarding the extension talks between the Oilers and McDavid. The news Johnston shared is not exactly what Oilers fans want to hear, but it certainly added fuel to the fire that McDavid could be looking to jump ship which will excite Leafs Nation.
"To my knowledge there's been no discussions about an extension yet."
Despite being able to sign an extension for the past three weeks, McDavid has seemingly had no interest in beginning negotiations -- at least not just yet.
McDavid is expected to sign the richest contract in NHL history sometime between now and next summer. The obvious hope is that he'll continue to hold out and do that with the Maple Leafs as a UFA next summer.
Until it is publicly known that he is staying in Edmonton, rumours will continue to swirl about a potential homecoming for the 28-year-old Toronto native.
