Returning to the ice after a 7-2 win, the Leafs avoided disaster early in practice in Monday after head coach Craig Berube was involved in an open-ice collision.
Saturday saw the Leafs get their first regulation win in nearly a month, with one of their best efforts of the season against the Pittsburgh Penguins.
After taking Sunday to enjoy the Florida weather, the Leafs returned to practice on Monday afternoon.
a momentary scare at practice as Berube involved in collision
Early into practice, head coach Craig Berube and defenseman Jake McCabe were involved in an open-ice collision. Unfortunately, the 32-year-old McCabe seemingly got the worst of it as Berube reportedly stood his ground, jokingly asking if McCabe was okay after the exchange.
Thankfully, McCabe avoided any injury, but it has been a tough road trip for the Wisconsin native as he began it by taking a puck to the face against the Montreal Canadiens last Saturday.
McCabe's new partner
Without Chris Tanev, as he continues to recover from a concussion and Brandon Carlo who does not to be as close to a return as initially thought, McCabe was paired with waiver claim Troy Stecher during Monday's practice.
The 31-year-old Stecher has been a pleasant surprise for the Leafs, bringing some sandpaper, puck movement and speed to the blueline. The latter two attributes will be of importance on Tuesday as the Leafs look to move to 3-2 on their six-game road trip when they visit the Florida Panthers.
