The Maple Leafs were one of many professional sports teams to share a tribute to the 'Prince of Darkness' and legendary rock star Ozzy Osbourne following his passing this week.
On Tuesday, the world was given some sad news as Ozzy Osbourne
passed away at the age of 76. The 'Prince of Darkness' passed away just weeks after his band Black Sabbath performed their final show on July 5th.
"It is with more sadness than mere words can convey that we have to report that our beloved Ozzy Osbourne has passed away this morning. He was with his family and surrounded by love. We ask everyone to respect our family privacy at this time," said his family in a statement confirming his passing.
As tributes poured in on social media on Tuesday and into Wednesday, the Maple Leafs shared a video of Osbourne that they often used during TV timeouts and between stoppages to get the crowd at Scotiabank Arena to make some noise.
In classic Osbourne fashion, the front-man used a profanity-laced speech that was filtered with bleeps and a miniature Leafs logo covering his mouth during his cursing to get Leafs Nation on their feet.
Osbourne was diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease in 2020, and while undergoing treatment, he also had multiple spinal surgeries that unfortunately did not fix previous issues, leaving him unable to move around freely.
His final show featured the 76-year-old performing in a custom-made bat throne. Despite being unable to move around the stage as he had throughout his career, Ozzy brought those in attendance to tears as he performed for the final time.
Widely considered a pioneer of heavy rock music, the charismatic front-man had his share of controversies over his career, but as he aged, he remained grounded and humble.
Osbourne will be missed by many, but his legacy will live on. We send our condolences to his friends and family.
