Toronto Maple Leafs head coach Craig Berube is already demanding more out of one new forward addition after just one game to begin the season.

The Toronto Maple Leafs kicked off their 2025-26 season in style with an impressive 5-2 win over their long-time rivals, the Montreal Canadiens.
For Matias Maccelli, it marked his first regular-season game as a Maple Leaf. The 24-year-old winger notched an assist in the victory, playing alongside Auston Matthews and Matthew Knies on the team's top line -- a good debut on paper.
However, despite registering his first point in blue and white, head coach Craig Berube made it clear that he expects more from the newcomer, particularly when it comes to confidence and assertiveness in his play.
As shared by David Alter on X:
"I just talked to him about his game a little bit, discussed some things that I saw as good, and there are other things that I want him to feel more confident."

Berube added that while Maccelli has the tools to succeed, he needs to lean into them more effectively:
"He's a good player, he's got abilities, so just play with that confidence. Use your skills, use your skill set."

Maccelli Needs to Step Up with Big Opportunity at Stake

While Maccelli managed to contribute offensively in his debut, his coach's comments suggest that the expectations are higher -- especially given the prime opportunity of skating on the top line.
At 24 years old, Maccelli has yet to experience playoff hockey. Before the season began, he spoke openly about his desire to reach the postseason and rebound from what he considered a down-season.
It looks like he will get another chance to prove himself on the Matthews line in the Maple Leafs' upcoming game -- an Original Six matchup against the Detroit Red Wings on the road on Saturday.
For Maccelli, it's not just about collecting points; it's about earning trust. If he can combine his playmaking vision with greater confidence and intensity, he has a chance to solidify his place on the top line.
