Maple Leafs captain Auston Matthews shares his thoughts on the reduced ice size for the hockey arena at the 2026 Olympic Winter Games in Milan.

Auston Matthews is not worried about the dimensions of the ice in Milan, even as uncertainty continues around the construction of the 2026 men's Olympic hockey venue.
For Auston Matthews and the Toronto Maple Leafs, the focus is currently on their season, as they attempt to right the ship, collecting back-to-back wins to move to 12-11-3 on the season. Still, for Matthews, he's been keeping one eye on the Olympics, which are just a couple of short months away.
Questions have swirled for months regarding whether the rink will meet international standards or end up smaller than originally planned.
Some players have expressed concern about the reduced ice surface, but Matthews delivered a calm, almost shrug-like response when asked about it this week.
"In the end, it can be a 100x100 foot sheet. You just want to go out there and play and have that opportunity," Matthews said.

His point was clear. The dimensions matter far less than the chance to represent the United States on the world's biggest stage.

The Leafs captain did acknowledge the uncertainty, adding he hopes officials finish the arena construction in time. He quickly followed with a reminder that elite players adapt fast.
That mindset is not surprising given Matthews' history. His game translates anywhere because it is built on pace, deception and lethal finishing, not reliance on oversized ice. Olympic play, regardless of rink size, remains a best-on-best environment he has yet to experience.

Auston Matthews focused on opportunity, not rink dimensions

Fans have reacted positively to Matthews' perspective. Many simply want assurance that best-on-best hockey returns, and the captain's comments reflect that same desire. For players, the Olympics are about national pride and legacy, not measurements and blueprints.
Still, the rink situation remains a storyline. Construction delays have raised concerns inside the NHL and NHLPA, and Bill Daly has even suggested that the league's participation depends on the venue being completed before the Olympic Games begin.
Matthews' stance signals confidence rather than anxiety. He is ready, no matter the size, no matter the noise. And if Milano Cortina pulls everything together, the hockey world may finally get what they've been waiting for since the Sochi Games in 2014.
