Maple Leafs GM Brad Treliving catches up with the Toronto media and has revealed where things currently stand with Matthew Knies and John Tavares ahead of the draft and free agency.
Getting both players signed to deals before they are exposed to the rest of the league on July 1st (whether it be UFA or offer sheet) would be ideal, but based on Leafs GM Brad Treliving's comments from his season-end media availability, avoiding an offer-sheet scenario with Knies seemed to be the more pressing issue for Treliving.
Brad Treliving Updates Fans on Extension Talks for Knies, Tavares
Preparing for the draft this weekend, Treliving took a few moments to speak with the media on Thursday where he confirmed what many suspected about Mitch Marner and confirmed Wednesday's reports of progress on extensions for Knies and Tavares.
Discussing Tavares, Treliving noted that they are still working on both the term and dollar amount, but is hopeful that something will get done before July 1st.
"It's been positive. We both expressed a shared outcome, which is [that] John wants to stay and we want to keep John. Like any contract, there's two stumbling blocks: term and money. We're moving hopefully in a direction to bring it to closure. My hope is, until proven otherwise, that we'll have a good outcome there."
In terms of the progress on Knies' extension, the Leafs GM made it a point to mention July 1st, but noted that he was not overly worried if a deal wasn't in place by then.
"Lots of communication. You want to protect yourself moving into the summer past July 1. An offer sheet, that's not anything you can operate in fear with. We're very hopeful that it will get to a good conclusion. When that is, time will tell."
