The Maple Leafs and John Tavares continue to work on an extension, but reports surrounding the money he would get in free agency may be too hard to walk away from.

As TSN's Darren Dreger reported that progress had been made on an extension yesterday, it is not a done deal just yet as July 1st approaches.
Last week, Matt Duchene signed a four-year extension with the Dallas Stars that many expected to be an appropriate common ground for the Leafs and Tavares.
TSN's Pierre LeBrun believes something with a $5M or more annual salary will get the job done, but also noted that the money that Tavares could get on the open market may be too lucrative to pass up.

John Tavares Could Get North of $7M on the Open Market

In his latest piece for The Atheltic, LeBrun explained that many around the NHL believe Tavares could get as much as $8M per season on a short-term deal if he hit free agency on Tuesday.
Despite a desire to stay in Toronto, Tavares may have one more opportunity to cash in as his career fades into the sunset and if the Leafs don't come close to the total dollar amount that he could get on the open market, the 34-year-old may very well move on from his hometown team.
