Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman has revealed the expected cap hit for Maple Leafs goaltender Anthony Stolarz as the two sides grind towards a multi-year extension.
His deadline comes as he and the Maple Leafs had been engaged in extension talks for weeks in the hopes of reaching an agreement to keep the New Jersey native in Toronto beyond this season. Stolarz really likes the fit in Toronto as well.
Stolarz recently stated during an appearance on 'Leafs Morning Take' that he doesn't need a high cap hit, but that he is just looking to be paid fairly. It has been a difficult negotiation so far, given the lack of a clear comparable for the 31-year-old, but both sides remain hopeful.
Maple Leafs Could End Up With Bargain Price For Goaltending Tandem
As the second week of training camp begins, Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman revealed on Monday's "32 Thoughts: The Podcast" that Stolarz and the Leafs have closed the gap on dollar value significantly, confirming that the Stanley Cup Champion's deal should land at a very reasonable number.
"I think Stolarz and the Leafs are going back and forth. When they started, it was a pretty wide chasm there and I do believe it has narrowed. It seems to me this is likely to be three or four years. We're looking at somewhere between $4.5M and $5M."
If the Leafs were to get Stolarz signed at even $5M, they would have him and
Joseph Woll locked up for less than $9M per season -- which is quite a steal when you look across the league at what some teams are paying tandem goaltenders.
While there still may be a fair amount of work to be done on an extension, the fact the gap has narrowed on dollar amount is a sign that we could see an announcement at some point soon.
