Pending UFA goaltender Anthony Stolarz has provided some much-needed clarification on contract talks, and it has created some pressure for the Maple Leafs.
With the Toronto Maple Leafs' players reporting for training camp, a lot of attention has shifted towards goaltender Anthony Stolarz and his looming contract extension.
It has been reported that both sides have been engaging in negotiations and
there's now a clear date as Stolarz would like to have things done before the season opener.
So, once the season starts, that's all I want to focus on, and that's kind of all I want my attention to be. Like I said, I'm going to let my agent and (Brad Treliving) talk that out, and hopefully we can get something done here soon.
Stolarz had another terrific season last year when he led the league in save percentage for the second straight year. Unfortunately injuries cut his season - and playoffs - short, which has been a detriment to his career to date.
Nevertheless, both sides understand the situation, and as Stolarz mentions, he would like to get this done as soon as possible so he can put all of his focus onto the upcoming season, rather than having to worry about the outside noise that would instinctively follow.
When asked about the extension, GM Brad Treliving didn't want to get into the details, but did mention that they're talking and looking for the right deal.
I don't get into a whole lot of discussion about contracts. We're seeing if it can fit. It's got to work for the player. He's got to feel comfortable. It's got to work for us. I'm confident [it will get done], until proven otherwise.
As for Stolarz, he remains confident about the situation, and will be leaving it in the hands of his agent as he looks to prepare himself during training camp.
I kind of let him deal with that. At the end of the day, my job is to go out there and stop the puck. And with camp starting today, that's kind of what I want to focus on. We've had some good talks, some good dialect, so hopefully we get something done soon.
Pre-season games will commence on the 21st of September with the regular season opener scheduled for 8th of October. There's plenty of time in between to hash things as Stolarz would like to have something etched in stone before the start of the new campaign.
