After another ghastly performance, Maple Leafs head coach Craig Berube calls out his defense and goaltending as inconsistencies continue to show.
In a game you felt they almost needed to come out victorious in, the Toronto Maple Leafs pulled out another stinker, as they dropped a crucial divisional contest against the Boston Bruins, snapping a 3-game winning streak.
After
Nicholas Robertson opened the scoring, the Bruins responded with 2 goals in the next 20 seconds, before taking a 2-goal lead to open the second period.
Additionally, goaltender
Anthony Stolarz was pulled after allowing 4 goals on 19 shots, and although they came close to mounting a comeback with
Dennis Hildeby in between the pipes, the Leafs fell short of the mark.
After the game, head coach Craig Berube was not having any of it, and decided to air out his frustrations over his defensive units and goaltending, directing a pointed finger towards Stolarz.
We all have to be better, the goaltender included. We're not as tight defensively (as last year).
The Leafs entered Saturday night's slate of games ranked 29th in the league in goals against at 3.57. As a collective unit, they've been letting in goals aplenty in recent weeks with 35 over their last 9 contests. Additionally, the Leafs have only allowed 2 goals or less three times this year, and just once since October 16th.
Some of that can be attributed to injuries on the back-end, primarily
Chris Tanev, but we can't steer away from Stolarz. The hulking netminder has allowed 38 goals in 12 games and has posted a concerning .888 SV% after signing a 4-year extension before the season started.
Berube is justified in being upset with how his team has started out the season, especially when compared to their efforts in 2024-25. It's been an ongoing issue since the season began and it doesn't seem to be getting any better.
They will have an opportunity to avenge their defeat when they visit the Bruins on Tuesday night. However, they have to shift their focus quickly to the high-flying Carolina Hurricanes, who visit the Scotiabank Arena later tonight.
