Maple Leafs Place Goaltender on Waivers

Coming into the season, one of the biggest questions surrounding the Toronto Maple Leafs was in goal. After Joseph Woll took a personal leave of absence, it left the Leafs with more uncertainty than they'd like when it came to their goaltending depth.
With
Dennis Hildeby still viewed as a project and not quite ready to take on a full-time NHL role, Toronto seemed bound to make an addition.
That chance came when Cayden Primeau hit waivers from the Carolina Hurricanes, and the Leafs didn't hesitate to grab him.
In 2023-24, he posted a .910 save percentage in 23 games with the Canadiens, a respectable mark that hinted at real NHL potential, even though his tenure in Montreal never really panned out..That upside made him worth a look for Toronto, who were desperate for stability in the crease.
Woll's Return Forces Another Goalie Shuffle in Toronto
Now, with Joseph Woll back and healthy, the Leafs have placed Primeau on waivers. It's not entirely surprising, but it does make for a worthwhile opportunity for the Leafs if Primeau clears.
His brief stint in Toronto hasn't been great, but he gave the Leafs what they needed, filling in for a few starts to let
Anthony Stolarz rest.
If Primeau clears waivers, this could quietly turn into a win for the Leafs. Having a capable third option tucked away in the system could prove valuable later in the year, especially when load management and back-to-backs start to pile up.
Even if he's not part of the long-term picture, having someone you can call on in a pinch is never a bad thing, especially in a season that's already tested Toronto's goaltending depth.
