Maple Leafs head coach Craig Berube was captured on camera shouting at his players for putting forth a lacklustre effort on day one of training camp.

Throughout the Kyle Dubas and Sheldon Keefe era, it always felt like accountability wasn't really there for the Maple Leafs. Year after year, it was the same story: "We trust our guys, they'll get it done." But, the truth is that approach never worked when it mattered most.
Now, under Brad Treliving and Craig Berube, there's finally a different tone being set, and you can already see it early at training camp. Camp isn't supposed to be a place where players get comfortable and just go through the motions. It's supposed to be competitive -- a battle where you earn your spot.
That seems to be exactly what Berube is pushing for. Even on day one, it's clear he's trying to get the best out of his group, making sure only the players who truly deserve a lineup spot will get one come October. That's why when players began to show signs of slacking on Thursday, Berube absolutely let them have it.
Obviously, guys like Auston Matthews and William Nylander are locked into the lineup, but for others like David Kampf and Nicholas Robertson, it's not guaranteed. That's where the accountability factor comes in, because this year, it feels like the fringe guys will actually have to fight for their chance.
This is where having a top-end coach makes a difference. Craig Berube's been there, he's won before, and he knows what it takes. You can already see the intensity picking up, and that's a huge sign for the Leafs going forward.
On top of that, both training camp groups look strong and balanced, which hasn't always been the case. Filling out a complete roster in October should be no issue.
And with the first preseason game coming up on Sunday, the urgency is only going to ramp up. Berube and Treliving will need to decide quickly who they want to see more of, which means the next couple of weeks should be full of hard battles.
