Maple Leafs general manager Brad Treliving has spent all of the departed Mitch Marner's salary, and the way he did it certainly provides the team with a lot of depth.

When the Leafs traded Mitch Marner to the Vegas Golden Knights, some were not happy with the fact Nicolas Roy was the only player the Leafs got in return. Others called it a win for Treliving given the situation, but the reality is that outside of Roy, the Leafs had a lot more money to spend.
Coming off of a 6-year deal that carried what many saw as an very high $10.9M cap hit, Marner signed an 8-year extension worth $12M per season as part of the trade to Vegas. While the Leafs have not landed a true replacement for him, Treliving has stuck to the plan he laid out when speaking to the media following the trade.
Treliving explained that his moves to replace Marner wouldn't be anything fancy, but rather a 'by committee' approach to replace the 28-year-old through spreading what would have been his cap hit throughout the lineup.
So far, before acquiring Dakota Joshua in a trade with the Vancouver Canucks on Thursday, Treliving has also added Michael Pezzetta, Matias Maccelli and the aforementioned Roy, totalling $10.5M -- less than Marner's previous cap hit and much less than his new one.
The additions aren't flashy by any means, but they provide the Leafs with the type of depth they haven't had in years. Rather than relying on cheap UFA signings, Treliving and the Leafs were actually able to build up valuable depth, and he's not done yet.
Treliving has made it no secret he would still like to add to his top-six, so before we fully evaluate his summer, we'll have to wait to see what he does next.
