Auston Matthews, Morgan Rielly Bring Closure to Mitch Marner Situation With Honest New Comments

Auston Matthews and Morgan Rielly officially put an end to the Mitch Marner era in Toronto with some new comments at the start of training camp.
A trade to the Vegas Golden Knights on July 1st officially ended Mitch Marner's contentious nine-year tenure with the Maple Leafs, but he has continued to be the talk of the Toronto media -- particularly for his comments at the end of August, blaming Leafs Nation for his departure.
Auston Matthews and Morgan Rielly Turn the Page on the Mitch Marner Era
On Wednesday, training camps across the NHL opened and two players, Morgan Rielly and Auston Matthews, decided to turn the page and began a new era in Toronto without Mitch Marner by issuing some final comments on the matter. Both supported him in his decision, but are ready to move on.
"Those are always tough conversations to have. He'll be a friend of all of ours for life. He made his decision and we're moving on. We wish him the best," said the Leafs' Captain.
While Matthews wished his good friend the best, Rielly's answer was very blunt and hockey-based, clearly ready for a bounce-back season.
"People make choices. As a player and as teammates up here, you have to carry-on."
With that, and the official first day of training camp for the 2025-26 season under way, a new Marner-less era has begun in Toronto -- one that many reporters found to have a much lighter atmosphere than in the past.
