The Boston Bruins were handed a shocking upset defeat at the hands of the home team on Tuesday, as the Detroit Red Wings skated away with a 5-3 victory. The loss is a costly one for the Bruins, as the Leafs and Panthers both gained points on Tuesday.
To add insult to injury, the Bruins lost more than just the game, as big trade deadline acquisition Hampus Lindholm was injured on a very bizarre play during the 2nd frame, turning to pursue a dumped in puck, but bending over, clutching his knee.
It's unclear at this point if the injury is something that happened at another point in the game, with Lindholm attempting to play through the pain, or if he simply tweaked something on a routine play, which would be very unfortunate and unlucky. Regardless, Lindholm left the game and did not return.
The Bruins gave up a significant amount to bring in Lindholm, dealing a 1st rounder, two 2nd rounders, John Moore and a prospect in the deal. Granted, the B's brought Lindholm with the purpose of extending him, which they were able to do, so it's not as though he's merely a rental player. Nevertheless, that would be a tough loss to endure right before the playoffs.
