Maple Leafs forward Scott Laughton opens up about rookie sensation Easton Cowan's play and what he needs to do to succeed in the NHL.

As the Toronto Maple Leafs prepare for their preseason matchup against the Detroit Red Wings, speculation is swirling that tonight's lineup could mirror the team's likely opening night roster.
If true, it means that rookie Easton Cowan has earned a spot over veterans such as Nick Robertson, David Kampf, and Calle Jarnkrok. Cowan is currently skating on a fourth line with Scott Laughton and Steven Lorentz, and the trio has shown strong chemistry so far.
Laughton, a respected veteran, opened up about Cowan's play during training camp. As shared by Leafs Latest on X:
"Yeah, we've talked throughout camp a little bit. Being on the same line, I don't want to really say too much to him. I think he's going pretty good right now, so I kind of let him play, and that's it. I just try to help him on the ice as much as I can, on the bench and things like that."

Laughton also reflected on his own early career experiences, offering advice to his young linemate:
"I've been in that position many times, where you're fighting for it. It's tough. It's hard to make it, but it's harder to stay. That's one thing I really learned - how to be consistent every day in this league and bring it."

Finally, he expressed excitement about playing alongside the rookie:
"I'm really excited for him. He's been awesome on our line. It's been a lot of fun to play with him, and he's always looking to make plays, which I think helps."

Its Now or Never for Maple Leafs Prospect Easton Cowan

Cowan has echoed similar sentiments, noting how much he has learned from playing with Laughton and Lorentz, especially their responsible two-way approach.
Unlike past training camps, this year the 18-year-old has looked consistently like one of the best players on the ice, earning praise from coaches and teammates alike.
Maple Leafs fans will be eager to see if Cowan can take the next step and establish himself not just as a promising prospect, but as a reliable contributor at the highest level.
