Jeff Marek releases official statement about rumours of a split with Sportsnet
After reports surfaced Thursday about Jeff Marek's future at Sportsnet, he released an official statement on Friday about his future.
Marek mysteriously disappeared from Sportsnet's draft coverage after the first round at the end of June.
Jeff Marek and Elliotte Friedman were scheduled to release a «32 Thoughts» podcast episode to cover the opening day of free agency, which never happened, and that is when people started to notice his inactivity on social media.
A report from YYZ Sports Media surfaced yesterday, stating that Marek will no longer be working at Sportsnet, which means "The Jeff Marek Show" will very likely no longer be operational and his spot co-hosting on "32 Thoughts" is all but confirmed to be over as well.
Friday afternoon, Marek made his first public comments on social media since day one of the draft by releasing a statement about the rumours.
"Firstly, thanks for the outpouring of kinds words on Twitter/X. It really means the world to me," said Marek.
"After 13 great years at Sportsnet, I'm moving on. It's been an incredible journey and I'm thankful to have worked alongside so many great people and played a role in bringing sports and hockey news to fans across Canada and the world. More to come soon."
With Sportsnet's rights to national coverage expiring, it would not come as a surprise to see TSN and Bell media take a swing at bringing Marek on to bolster their already substantially better hockey coverage in an attempt to re-acquire national broadcasting rights. Whatever happens with Marek, though, we hope to have some idea of why the split has occurred in the coming days.
