Maple Leafs GM Brad Treliving continues to test the trade market on Nicholas Robertson, but have not found anyone that is willing to meet their specific asking price.
In the summer of 2024, Nick Robertson surprised many when he requested a trade out of Toronto for a fresh start. While the Maple Leafs acknowledged his request, they resisted the urge to give him away for next to nothing.
Instead, the 24-year-old signed a one-year deal and played in a career-high 69 games, setting a new career best of 15 goals.
Maple Leafs and Nick Robertson At Odds Again
This past summer, the Leafs and Robertson agreed on another one-year deal shortly before arbitration. Initially, it was reported that although he had agreed to a new deal, the former second-round pick still preferred to be traded.
"Something I've dealt with before. You want to be playing more & in that consistent lineup, but it is what it is. Season starts in about a week & anything can change. You just got to be confident & play well."
The California native went on to say that he is happy to be in Toronto, and received backing from Leafs' bench boss Craig Berube.
Darren Dreger Reveals The Complexities of Trading Nick Robertson
On Thursday's edition of 'Insider Trading', Darren Dreger revealed that the Leafs are not looking for draft picks in any trade involving Robertson, which is why it has taken so long to find a trade.
"Brad Treliving continues to explore the idea of moving
David Kampf and Nick Robertson... The Maple Leafs are in no rush to move (Robertson) out. If they were to get the right sort of return for Robertson, it would be a player of similar age."
It is well known that the Leafs believe Robertson can be an everyday contributor on their roster and are in no rush to trade him. He just needs to find more consistency.
So far this season, Robertson has largely played well when in the lineup, and his improved defensive play has been noticeable. In response, the Leafs have rewarded him with some time on the penalty kill.
While a trade could be easily made by Treliving, the potential that Robertson still possesses outweighs any potential return the Leafs may get at this time. If teams increase their bid, however, perhaps we'll see a deal done.
