The Toronto Maple Leafs appear to be ramping up efforts to complete a trade after the organization sends a high-ranking executive to scout the Hawks-Devils game.
The Toronto Maple Leafs have stumbled out of the gate in the 2025-26 season. The Blue and White currently hold an 8-8-1 record after dropping three straight games, with many believing that a shake-up is needed.
Maple Leafs' Injury Troubles Continue
The Maple Leafs have dealt with a ton of injuries to start the year -- most recently to captain
Auston Matthews, who did not return to Tuesday's game against the Boston Bruins, after a dangerous hit from
Nikita Zadorov in the second period.
Maple Leafs Need to Find a Spark
With the combination of injuries and the poor play, it may be time for the Maple Leafs to make a move, as the locker room is in desperate need of a spark.
It seems like the process has already begun, as a high-ranking executive was present at United Center in Chicago to scout the game between the Blackhawks and the New Jersey Devils on Wednesday.
Auston Matthews' Injury May Expedite a Deal for a Top-Six Forward
If two-time 60-goal scorer Auston Matthews is expected to be out long-term, the Leafs could be in some trouble. Already thin at the centre position due to other injuries, the severity of Matthews' injury could be what ramps up the team's efforts to acquire a replacement.
Currently outside of the playoff picture as we approach the quarter mark of the season, the Leafs need to right the ship, and fast. Perhaps an early-season trade is just what the doctor ordered for Brad Treliving's group -- though it is worth mentioning that they don't exactly have a ton of assets to work with, making a deal for an impact player a difficult proposition.
