The Maple Leafs may have an announcement coming regarding Easton Cowan after the rookie forward was scratched from the Marlies' lineup on Wednesday.

It's been a pretty wild start to the season for Maple Leafs rookie Easton Cowan, who earned a roster spot for the Leafs out of training camp only to become an early scratch, then appearing for the big club on the top line before ultimately being demoted to the AHL following Scott Laughton's return.

Cowan Scratched by the Marlies

For Cowan, he's taking it all in stride and being a good soldier, putting in the work no matter where he plays, whether it be 1st line, 4th line or in the American Hockey League.
However, after being listed as a healthy scratch for the Marlies ahead of Wednesday's game, it appears as though the Leafs have an announcement on the way regarding the young winger.
With Auston Matthews suffering a lower-body injury on Tuesday against the Boston Bruins, it's likely that Cowan is about to be recalled by the big club.
Matthews was hit from behind by Bruins defenseman Nikita Zadorov on Tuesday night, resulting in the Leafs captain crashing awkwardly into the boards and leaving the bench during the TV timeout. He would not return to the game.

Matthews' Absence Creates Another Potential Opportunity for Cowan

Following the loss to Boston, the Leafs' third consecutive loss, Craig Berube did not have much to say about the injury, other than the fact that it was a lower-body ailment and that Matthews would need to be assessed on Wednesday.
Cowan has scored a goal and added 3 assists in 10 games with the Leafs so far, and was on Craig Berube's good side. As a result, he would be on the Leafs' short list for a recall.
