Top NHL Insider Pierre LeBrun has shared an important update on the future of Brad Marchand with the Panthers as well as John Tavares with the Maple Leafs.

The Toronto Maple Leafs have some key decisions to make in the coming weeks, especially with regard to the futures of pending UFAs John Tavares and Mitch Marner with the club.
It's beginning to look more and more like Marner will not be coming back to the Maple Leafs, especially after reports surfaced that he and his representation have not engaged in any talks with Leafs management along with his recent cancellation of his annual Toronto charity event.
Meanwhile, Tavares has openly said he wants to return to the Leafs, but what would a potential contract look like?
During his most recent "32 Thoughts" podcast, NHL analyst Elliotte Friedman said that the Leafs would prefer to re-sign Tavares to a deal similar to what defenseman Chris Tanev got last summer (6 years, $27 million), while noting that some figures around the NHL think he could land a deal similar to what Brock Nelson just signed with the Avalanche (3 years, $22.5 million).
"I still think the Leafs would potentially like to do something along the Tanev line for him, but again, I had a few teams and agents say to me that Brock Nelson at 33 years old just signed for 3x$7.5 million (AAV) and he had 56 points.

26 goals and 30 assists. John Tavares, who, as we do this podcast, is 34 years old, just had a 38-goal season. These teams and agents think he can get what Nelson did, or right at it."

As far as pending Florida Panthers UFA Brad Marchand is concerned, Friedman thinks his next deal could land in the $8 million per year range and that the Leafs could potentially be involved in the mix.
"Marchand, it's such a tough one, because I said at the beginning of the Cup Final that he'd be getting a 3x$8M, but now I've had people telling me, 'You're gonna be off on this one, he's gonna get more.'

Maybe the magic number is $24 million, maybe he gets more than that in another structure or maybe he gets more than 3x$8M AAV... I think Toronto's gonna be in there."

It's going to be a critical summer for the Leafs, and the futures of Tavares and Marner with the club will be decided before long.
