Veteran forward Matt Duchene's new deal with the Dallas Stars may help shape the upcoming extension for Maple Leafs veteran John Tavares.

With the NHL season officially wrapped and the Florida Panthers crowned back-to-back Stanley Cup champions, teams are now turning their attention to offseason changes and roster retooling.
For the Toronto Maple Leafs, all signs point to the re-signing of veteran forward John Tavares in the coming weeks. The former captain has expressed his desire to remain with the club and is even rumored to be open to returning at a discount.
Earlier today, the Dallas Stars made a significant move by re-signing 34-year-old Matt Duchene to a team-friendly deal -- one that could set the market for aging but still productive veterans like Tavares.
As per Frank Seravalli on X:
"Matt Duchene's four-year extension with #TexasHockey carries a $4.5 million AAV."
Like Duchene, Tavares is 34 and remains a reliable contributor despite being in the latter stages of his career. Duchene had publicly expressed an interest in term, and the Stars gave him exactly that - a four-year deal at a reasonable $4.5M. This contract may serve as a benchmark for veteran signings league-wide.
Tavares clearly loves playing in Toronto, and if he's open to similar terms, or potentially even a steeper discount, a 5-year, $4 million AAV deal could be a win-win for both sides. It would allow the Leafs to retain leadership and experience while freeing up significant cap space for other roster upgrades.
While Duchene had previously been seen as a potential good fit in Toronto, the extra flexibility his market-setting contract model creates (if adopted by the Leafs with Tavares) could open the door to other opportunities for the Leafs, such as a reunion with former Leafs depth forward Mason Marchment, who has been rumoured to be on the trading block in Dallas.
With free agency approaching and more deals on the horizon, securing Tavares on a team-friendly extension could be the key to unlocking a big offseason for the Maple Leafs.
