Exciting News Regarding Leafs' Matthew Knies and John Tavares Emerges in Toronto

At his year-end press conference, Leafs GM Brad Treliving was hoping to get an extension done 'as soon as possible' with restricted free agent Matthew Knies.

He also echoed John Tavares' prior comments regarding positive conversations about a return next season.

The consensus was that Tavares and the Leafs would eventually find common ground on a new extension, but no one was really sure what that would look like. The same could be said for Knies, with Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman sharing the Leafs had set an internal deadline of June 30th to avoid any potential offer-sheets.

The Athletic's James Mirtle was on TSN 1050's 'Game Play' show on Tuesday afternoon, where he revealed that extensions for both players could be announced as soon as next week.

Leafs Nation is hopeful that Knies and the Leafs come to terms on any deal that doesn't walk him directly to free agency, while also hoping Tavares takes a larger than expected 'hometown discount'.

Knies flourished in his role alongside Auston Matthews and Mitch Marner this past season tallying 29 goals in 78 games, while the 34-year-old Tavares saw a career resurgence, notching 38 goals and 74 points in 75 games after a slower 2023-24 campaign.
