The Athletic's Jonas Siegel shared some disheartening news with Leafs fans following his exclusive interview with Maple Leafs star Mitch Marner over the weekend.

While on their California road trip, Maple Leafs star Mitch Marner sat down for an exclusive interview with Jonas Siegel of The Athletic, where they discussed all things Toronto, including the negativity he and his teammates face on social media at times.
Siegel also attempted to get a clear answer about Marner's contract situation. His attempts, however, appeared to irritate the 27-year-old.
Siegel made an appearance on TSN 1050's OverDrive on Friday, revealing what he took away from his conversation with Marner. Brace yourselves, Leafs Nation, you're not going to like hearing this.
"I left the conversation less sure he wants to stay than before. Now, that is just reading between the lines, and only he knows what exactly he is thinking, and obviously the playoffs will have a lot to do with everything, but I probably went into that 50-50 as to whether he stays or goes. I left it leaning more towards he might leave."
While Marner has continuously stated his desire to remain in Toronto Siegel wondered if the events of the trade deadline have caused him to question his future or if it has to do with him wanting to play in a quieter place where there he is not watched under a microscope.
One thing is for sure -- we won't have a clear answer about Marner's future until after the conclusion of the Stanley Cup Playoffs. Another early exit may lead to the team walking away.
However, if the Leafs go on a deep playoff run and Marner opts to leave after refusing to waive his NMC, he'll likely be labeled as public enemy number 1 in Toronto, similar to what we saw with John Tavares when he left Long Island after refusing to waive his NMC in 2018.
