When asked who he would like to have replace Mitch Marner on the Leafs top line, Matthew Knies' choice would give Toronto one of the best first lines in hockey.
One of the biggest question marks facing the Toronto Maple Leafs heading into the 2025-26 regular season is who will be replacing Mitch Marner on the top line when the puck drops on opening night.
With
Auston Matthews set to reprise his role alongside Matthew Knies, the third and final spot on that top line remains a mystery.
On the outside looking in, Nylander feels like the most obvious choice, primarily based on his skill set and offensive capabilities. However, he has built strong chemistry alongside 2C
John Tavares, which is probably why we haven't heard too much about Nylander slotting next to Matthews.
However, as Knies mentions, it wouldn't be a mistake either, considering the firepower that he would immediately bring.
Replacing Mitch Marner was never going to be an easy task but it certainly makes it a lot more manageable when you can swap in a 45-goal scoring in-house option.
Perhaps this is Knies' way of lobbying for Nylander to get some first line action. It wouldn't be the first time they've see the ice together at even-strength, as they played close to 60 minutes last year, on top of their power play time.
The Maple Leafs' 5-forward power play unit showcased a lot of chemistry and offensive talent, which could be another indication as to why Knies feels Nylander would fit right at home as their right winger on the top line.
Craig Berube could opt for more balance and slot in a player like Domi, while keeping Nylander with Tavares to keep his second line firing. But to realize their full potential, it's important that Matthews and Knies play next to a crafty playmaker, and Nylander might be the only one that fits the bill in that regard.
Putting all three together to start the season could make for a fun line, and one that could feature as one of the best trios in hockey. Collectively they have the potential to combine for 140 goals and well over 250 points in a healthy 82-game season, and that alone should make the case plenty appealing for Berube and company.
