Maple Leafs Struggling to Move Bottom-Six Forward Because of Significant Contract Mistake

According to PuckPedia, the Maple Leafs currently sit at $1.9M in available cap space and a 23-man roster that includes 14 forwards, 7 defensemen and two goalies.

It marks the first time in a very long time that the Leafs won't have to make a trade or waive someone just to get under the cap ahead of the regular season.

That, however, isn't stopping Treliving from attempting to continue to make changes to his forward group after another disappointing departure from the playoffs.

Before the additions of Dakota Joshua, Matias Maccelli and Nicolas Roy, reports surfaced that the club was looking to part with a pair of bottom-six forwards.

Over the past two seasons, Calle Jarnkrok has played 52 and 19 games due to a handful of injuries. A versatile forward when healthy, the 33-year-old doesn't appear to have a spot in the lineup following the additions Treliving has made.

In addition to trying to move out Jarnkrok, Treliving is also attempting to move on from David Kampf, who is entering the third year of a four-year deal that he signed during Treliving's first months in Toronto.

Some have pointed to Kampf's $2.4M cap hit as the issue making it difficult for Treliving to move the 30-year-old. Sure, it has caused some difficulty as no one really wants to pay a fourth-line center that much money, but the biggest detractor is Treliving's own mistake -- giving Kampf a 10-team no-trade clause.

As much as Treliving has tried to trade Kampf, the Leafs may have to go the waivers route, or simply wait it out and deal him next year when his trade protection expires. With training camp fast approaching, Kampf's place on the roster will quickly become apparent.
