Maple Leafs prospect Roni Hirvonen is in some hot water in the Finnish hockey league SM-Liiga following an on-ice incident that could lead to a lengthy suspension.
The move has paid early dividends for Hirvonen, who has had quite the start in the SM-Liiga, tallying 12 points in 11 games for Karpat. Unfortunately, during Karpat's game on Wednesday, the 23-year-old let his emotions get the best of him.
Roni Hirvonen Facing Lengthy Suspension in SM-Liiga
As Karpat had scored, Hirvonen was engaged in a battle with JYP Jyvaskyla's Mikko Perttu before turning around and delivering a stiff cross-check straight to the face.
Hirvonen was immediately ejected from the game, receiving a five-minute major and game misconduct. The former second-round pick is now facing what could be a lengthy suspension as the incident is currently under review with SM-Liiga's disciplinary committee.
One, the IIHF and leagues in Europe are often stricter when it comes to discipline surrounding head-shots or high hits, and two, Perttu was injured on the play, whereas Greig was not.
While Hirvonen's immediate playing future is in the hands of the disciplinary committee, his future with the Leafs will remain in question. If the Leafs do not issue him a qualifying offer next off-season, he will become a UFA.
