Now former Maple Leafs goaltender Matt Murray has publicly reflected on his injury-filled tenure with the Maple Leafs during an appearance on The JD Bunkis Podcast.
Although Kyle Dubas was confident that Murray's injury issues were not of concern, Leafs Nation had other thoughts that proved to be correct. Over three seasons with the Leafs, Murray played in only 28 games, 26 of which were during the 2022-23 season, as injuries once again limited his playing time.
In October of 2023, Murray
underwent bi-lateral hip surgery, which effectively ended his season before it began -- although, to the surprise of many, he returned to action for the Toronto Marlies at the end of the season.
After signing with the Seattle Kraken on July 1st, officially ending his roller-coaster tenure with the Leafs, Murray appeared on 'The JD Bunkis Podcast' on Friday, where he discussed his injury-filled three seasons with the Leafs. Murray had nothing but gratitude for his time in Toronto despite all of the ups and downs.
"I enjoyed every second in Toronto. I absolutely loved it. It was the honour of a lifetime to wear that jersey."
After winning two Stanley Cups as a rookie with the Pittsburgh Penguins in 2016, and again in 2017, expectations were sky-high for the former third-round pick. Unfortunately, injuries began to take a toll on him, culminating in his hip surgery in October of 2023.
The 31-year-old will look to re-establish himself as a quality NHL backup in Seattle next season after posting a very respectable 1.72 GAA and .934 save percentage in 21 games for the Toronto Marlies last season.
