Former Maple Leafs Enforcer Ryan Reaves Reveals Most Likely Post-Retirement Plans
Former Maple Leafs enforcer and new San Jose Shark Ryan Reaves has revealed what his career plan will be once he retires from playing NHL hockey.
It's hard to imagine the NHL without Ryan Reaves. One of, if not THE, last true enforcer in the league, Reaves' retirement will bring about the end of an era.
That said, in a recent appearance on the Cam and Strick Podcast, the 39-year-old clearly said he plans to play for another two seasons, hopefully reaching the 1000 game mark and a Stanley Cup win before finally retiring from the league.
Reaves, who was traded to the San Jose Sharks late Thursday night, also talked about his plans for his post-playing life. He said he's been thinking about coaching a lot the past couple of years.
"I think I'd be a good coach. I would like to coach."
Reaves was quick to point out he doesn't want to go to the AHL and "ride the bus" as a coach as his back and shoulders wouldn't allow it, but reiterated that coaching and management are things that are at the top of mind for him.
"I think I would really enjoy coaching. I think I would really enjoy management... trying to build a team, a championship team, sounds like a really good time."
Reaves added there is some interest in doing television once he's no longer playing, as well as running hockey camps and passing on his knowledge of the game to the younger generation. He is already standing behind the bench for some of his nine year old son's hockey games.
Reaves certainly has a lot of experience in different scenarios to hand down to those dreaming of a career in hockey, which makes his coaching and/or management plans quite plausible. He's played for six teams in the NHL so far, and has made a ton of contacts, friends, and potential coaching co-workers along the way.
