Sportsnet Announces Steep Price Hike, Gouging Fans Even Further with Corporate Greed
Per an official announcement from the company Sportsnet has just confirmed that a steep price hike is coming, showcasing their corporate greed.
Once again, it's going to cost more to watch your favourite team play hockey in the 2025-26 NHL season. And, while prices on most things are going up, this increase is anything but insignificant.
Sportsnet+ has sent an email to all subscribers notifying them that its standard and premium packages are subject to price increases of 30 percent in advance of the 2025-26 NHL season. The premium package gives you access to the most number of games.
The official notice was posted in r/hockey on Reddit by a subscriber, and more subscribers have since come forward to express their outrage.
"We wanted to let you know that effective September 9, 2025, the price of your Sportsnet+ Premium annual plan will increase from your current price of $249.99 plus applicable taxes per year to $324.99 plus applicable taxes per year. This change will be reflected on your next billing date from September 9, 2025 onwards, unless you cancel or modify your subscription before then."
This is not, as you can imagine, getting a positive reaction on social media. Several X users have posted their own emails from Sportsnet+, with some clearly stating their reasons why they won't be renewing.
It has also been noted that, even if you agree to the increase to get the premium package, you will still be subjected to blackouts based on where you live and what team you're looking to watch.
While the cost of living continues to steadily increase, a jump of this size in the price of streaming hockey will likely result in many hitting the cancel button. This can't be good for the game as the NHL struggles to increase its existing fan base.
It's worth pointing out that Rogers Communications Inc., which owns Sportsnet+, closed a deal earlier this month to become the majority shareholder of the Toronto Maple Leafs.
