Maple Leafs Claim Defenceman Off Waivers From the Oilers

The Maple Leafs addressed a pressing need on their blueline Saturday afternoon, claiming a defenceman off of waivers from the Edmonton Oilers.
Losing their last four games, the Leafs have struggled immensely to move the puck out of their own zone. The inability to move the puck quickly has led to a number of turnovers and, ultimately, pucks in the back of their net at the least opportune times.
Leafs Pivot From Offense To Defense
Since the beginning of the season, the Leafs and GM Brad Treliving had been looking to add another top-six forward. However, their current losing streak and poor defensive play has forced Treliving to pivot to seeking out a defensive upgrade instead.
Leafs Claim Stecher From Oilers
With limited cap space and assets available to trade, Treliving took advantage of the Oilers placing right-handed blueliner
Troy Stecher on waivers on Friday afternoon. The Leafs have claimed Stecher from Edmonton.
The 31-year-old played in 66 games for the Oilers last season, but has only skated in six for the club so far this season.
Considered to be a puck-moving defenceman, the Leafs are hoping the addition of Stecher will improve their ability to move the puck out of their zone much quicker.
He won't be in the lineup on Saturday, but I would expect him to draw in on Tuesday.
In 566 career NHL games, Stecher had accumulated 22 goals and 95 assists.
