Brad Treliving is reportedly set to shake up the Leafs' roster in a major way once David Kampf clears waivers and his contract is officially terminated.
In the midst of a four-game losing streak, the Leafs' defensive play and inability to move the puck quickly out of their own zone and up the ice have become major concerns -- so much so, that GM Brad Treliving has shifted his focus from acquiring a top-six forward to looking at a significant addition on the blueline.
Kampf, Leafs to Terminate Contract
After a long process, without being able to find a trade partner, the Leafs and David Kampf mutually agreed to terminate his contract.
The move is beneficial for both sides, as it frees up valuable cap space for the Leafs this season and next, and allows Kampf to find a new team to continue his NHL career.
Kampf will officially be free to sign with any team once he clears waivers at 2PM on Friday afternoon.
Leafs, Flames Engaged in Blockbuster Trade Talks
On Thursday's edition of 'Leafs Morning Take', former Leafs enforcer and co-host Jay Rosehill revealed that the Leafs are being very aggressive in an attempt to acquire right-handed defenseman
Rasmus Andersson out of Calgary.
With very limited assets to trade, many expect the Leafs to be forced to part with a combination of their 2028 first-round pick and
Easton Cowan or
Ben Danford. However, according to an unconfirmed report, the Leafs may be able to keep all three.
A European scout has reported that the Leafs and Flames will be completing a deal for Andersson once Kampf's contract is terminated. Per the report, the Leafs may be parting with either
Matias Maccelli and a second-round pick or Nick Robertson, a prospect and a second-round pick with their 2028 first-round pick likely off the table.
The difference in packages likely depends on whether Andersson is willing to sign an extension in Toronto.
Personally, if I had to choose between Maccelli and Robertson, I would keep Robertson at this point and add something else to the Maccelli package, as he has not looked good with the Leafs this season, while Robertson is finally beginning to spread his wings.
