Maple Leafs Reportedly in Talks About a Blockbuster Deal With Flames

The Maple Leafs are reportedly working on a blockbuster trade with Brad Treliving's former team the Calgary Flames in an attempt to address a pressing lineup need.
Over the past week, the Leafs have lost three games in a row -- two to the Boston Bruins. They have also lost
Scott Laughton,
Auston Matthews and
Anthony Stolarz to injury and have now found themselves sitting 15th in the Eastern Conference and 7th in the Atlantic Division.
They need to change something, and are apparently attempting to do so by pushing to acquire a disgruntled defenseman in Calgary.
Leafs Clearing Some Additional Cap Space
After a long, drawn out process, the Leafs officially placed veteran
David Kampf on waivers on Thursday afternoon to terminate his contract and allow him to sign elsewhere.
Treliving had been trying to move the Czech native for a draft pick, but could not find anyone willing to take on a fourth-liner making that kind of money.
The move frees up $1.25M in cap space ($1.15M was buried in the minors) and a full $2.4M next season. That amount is not insignificant.
Maple Leafs, Flames Engaged in Trade Talks
For much of the season, Brad Treliving's goal has been to secure help in the top-6. However, since the start of the season, the Leafs' inability to cleanly move the puck out of their own zone has become a massive problem. Apparently, the Leafs are now considering a big move to acquire a puck-moving defenseman.
According to co-host of 'Leafs Morning Take' and former Maple Leafs enforcer Jay Rosehill, the Leafs are aggressively trying to get
Rasmus Andersson out of Calgary.
As the Flames continue to flounder to begin the season, sitting last in the Western Conference, it would appear they are now ready to listen to offers.
Limited prospects and draft picks will make any trade difficult to complete, with TSN's Darren Dreger revealing that teams are asking the Leafs for the likes of
Matthew Knies,
Ben Danford and
Easton Cowan in any significant deal.
The Leafs desperately need a mobile defenseman and Andersson would be the perfect fit. Giving up Knies or Cowan accomplishes nothing when you are already looking for a top-six forward, so it would have to be Danford and a 1st round pick as a starting point for this to make sense.
Treliving has the green light from MLSE to go for it, and it seems he is ready to do just that. The question is, can he get this deal across the finish line?
