Maple Leafs forward William Nylander shared a unique take on the team's current struggles, using logic to try to calm the chaos surrounding the struggling club.

As the Toronto Maple Leafs attempt to right the ship amid a four game losing skid, one of the team's stars is dismissing concerns about defense.
William Nylander admits that the Maple Leafs have not been good defensively this season, but added that he would be far more concerned if the team was struggling to score, which is the hardest thing in the league to do and the very thing needed to win games.

Maple Leafs William Nylander Shuts Down Concerns over Team's Defense

Nylander, who has had a great offensive start to the 2025-26 season with 25 points in 15 games, believes that fixing defensive issues is a lot easier than the alternative would be if the Leafs were good defensively and instead struggling to score.
"I think that defensively we have been struggling, and that is something that can be fixed, and you can adjust and make changes to be better at that, with better attention to details. I would be more worried if we weren't scoring goals because that's harder, I think, to do. Not letting in goals has been hard for us this year, and that's something that you can change and adjust and do better."

Defense Can be Fixed, Insists Maple Leafs William Nylander

While I get what Nylander is trying to say, if the defense can be fixed, now is the time to do it rather than to dismiss the issue. Scoring goals is certainly important, but winning games without defense is a very difficult thing to do, regardless of how many goals you can score.
As one of the team's veteran players, Nylander has a responsibility to his teammates to lead by example. If he begins to prioritize strong defensive play and supporting his teammates, others will follow.
