While it seems like a lot of players try to hide from the spotlight of playing in a market like Toronto, Leafs forward Scott Laughton has a very different take.
This off-season a common trend with a lot of players has been their unwillingness to want to play in a pressure-filled market like Toronto. Some free agents that the Toronto Maple Leafs were targeting
even shied away from the opportunity.
However, there is also a band of players that relish in the idea of playing in a top market, where they find it more so a privilege than a burden, including Scott Laughton.
In an interview with Dave McCarthy, Laughton tackled several topics, including playing in a market like Toronto.
I think it's probably a little overplayed. I guess It depends on you individually as well. Just as a player yourself you put a lot of pressure on yourself. You want to win every night.
Laughton continued using a different approach to the topic, believing it's a privilege to play for a team that is on every TV, talked about on every radio station, and represented all over the city from October to April.
It's the biggest hockey market in the world and everyone knows that. You see it on TV all the time. It's hockey most of the time which I think is a privilege. People care about the sport. People want to watch hockey and see you do well.
The former first round pick also touched on the mentality of the dressing room, which has been heavily scrutinized over the years for having players that didn't seem to care about winning.
These guys care in here. That's one of biggest things coming over at the deadline is seeing how much every guy cares about each other and wanting to win and wanting to get to that next step and getting to that end goal.
It's a breath of fresh air to hear someone talking about playing for the city in a positive manner. Laughton certainly embodies what it takes to don the White and Blue, and with a contract year looming, expect big things from the feisty forward.
