Maple Leafs general manager Brad Treliving has revealed his take on Easton Cowan and whether or not the 20-year-old forward is ready to become an NHL player.
Last year around this time, Maple Leafs top prospect Easton Cowan was entering his second NHL training camp with his sights set on an NHL job come October. Well, we all know how that situation unfolded.
Cowan did not have the most impressive training camp, and Leafs GM Brad Treliving ended up sending Cowan back to London for his final OHL season, and what a great decision that was.
In his final OHL season, Cowan may not have enjoyed the most success during the regular season, finishing with just 69 points versus the 96 points he put up a year prior.
However, when the page turned and the playoffs began, Cowan was an absolute beast, collecting a career high 13 playoff goals and 39 points across just 17 playoff games.
Cowan helped the London Knights capture their second consecutive OHL championship, and not only helped his team win a Memorial Cup, but also skated away with
tournament MVP honours after leading his team with 7 points in the tournament.
When Leafs training camp opened, Leafs GM Brad Treliving was very complementary of Cowan, affirming that sending him down last year was the right call. He also thinks he's ready for the next step.
"I think him going back to London was 100 percent the right move. He had an exceptional year, he won a championship. I think he's ready now to push to be on the team. Is that now, is that October, is that a year from now? The players will decide."
