The Maple Leafs need help scoring goals, and fortunately, a solid goalscoring option has become available, and it's someone they have been linked to in the past.
As the NHL offseason approaches, teams are already making moves and evaluating their rosters ahead of the Draft and free agency.
The Toronto Maple Leafs are no exception, following yet another early playoff exit that has left both fans and the front office eager for change.
Former Leafs GM and current Pittsburgh Penguins President of Hockey Operations Kyle Dubas appears to be preparing for a bit of a roster overhaul. While veteran
Bryan Rust has already been mentioned in trade rumors, another intriguing name has surfaced:
Rickard Rakell -- a skilled winger who could be a solid top-six addition for the Leafs.
According to David Pagnotta on The Fourth Period Podcast, as shared by NHL Rumour Report on X:
"Penguins are looking to sell off pieces, entertaining offers on
Erik Karlsson, Rickard Rakell and
Bryan Rust; the Kings have been talking with them."
While there's no confirmation that Rakell is currently on the Leafs' radar, he absolutely should be. If the Penguins are entering a fire sale, a player of Rakell's caliber could be a great asset for the Leafs.
