A new report has a two-time Stanley Cup champion suddenly available, and he could be exactly what the doctor ordered for the Toronto Maple Leafs.
As the Maple Leafs gear up for a busy offseason following another disappointing playoff exit, the search for impactful roster additions is already underway.
With superstar winger Mitch Marner confirmed to be leaving, Toronto will need to fill a significant hole in their offense, and with a shallow UFA pool, that will be no easy feat.
The Leafs also need to work on changing the identity of the group as a whole. One name that has emerged is a veteran with two Stanley Cups who is reportedly available via trade from the Pittsburgh Penguins.
According to Pierre LeBrun on TSN 1050, as shared by NHL Rumour Report on X:
"Plenty of teams are calling on Penguins forward Bryan Rust."
With Marner's departure creating a major offensive gap, and with significant cap space now available, the Maple Leafs are in urgent need of reliable forwards. Rust could be a cost-effective veteran piece who brings both production and playoff experience to a team desperate for success.
While Rust wouldn't be a suitable replacement for Mitch Marner alone, he'd be an excellent piece to help achieve the DNA change that Brad Treliving is looking to achieve this summer.
