With rumours that the Leafs are looking to trade Calle Jarnkrok or David Kampf, former Leafs enforcer Jay Rosehill gives his two cents on who carries more value.
While the Toronto Maple Leafs addressed depth at the forward position, they're still looking to add, but with only $1.91 million in cap space to play with, they need to move off a contract or two, and that's where the problems arise.
There's been rumours aplenty about the Maple Leafs moving Calle Jarnkrok or David Kampf. However, the market has remained bone dry to this point of the off-season, which has prevented the Leafs from doing anything else.
Nick Alberga and Jay Rosehill recently touched on that topic on 'Leafs Morning Take', with the former Leafs enforcer looking into which veteran forward carries the most value. With Kampf, Rosehill doesn't believe that contending teams are lining up to acquire a player with his intangibles and such a high AAV.
"He just seems really quiet, he's good in the d-zone, he's good on face-offs, but if we're talking about a team that's going to make a run, I think i need a little bit more. He's got a pretty hefty contract too and he doesn't really move the needle for me."
Conversely with Jarnkrok, Rosehill feels that the Swedish forward no longer has that gamebreaking talent he might have once had, especially with how the league has changed and evolved in recent years.
"When you're getting up there in age and it's hard to be dynamic and the league's getting as good as it is, it's hard to invoke your will on the game as well."
Ultimately, if push came to shove, Rosehill believes Jarnkrok carries the most value because he does have the pedigree of scoring double digit goals and could still play in the top-6.
"I think Jarny is able to play through the lineup a little bit more, I think Jarny has the kind of skill to jump up in the lineup and maybe play on the second line if need be, but we're talking about them in this position for a reason."
If the Leafs could find a way to move either player without retaining salary, they would have anywhere between $2 and $2.4 million added to their cap space, which would theoretically be enough to acquire Jack Roslovic,
who they have been targeting for quite some time.
However, that seems like a pipe dream at the moment, unless they're able to convince another team to take on either Jarnkrok or Kampf's contracts.
