2017 Norris Trophy winning Drew Doughty could become a free agent in the summer of the 2019, but could sign a new contract extension with the Los Angeles Kings as early as this July.

Doughty has been playing with the media and has been coy about his plans to either hit the open market or remain with the Kings. He has even expressed his desire to play with the Maple Leafs on multiple occasions, including earlier this week.
Insider Elliotte Friedman was a guest on Sportsnet 960 AM in Calgary this morning and commented on the Doughty situation.
«I think it was interesting. Doughty loves walking in a dressing room and people ask him He's like, What am I going to say today to blow everything up.' And I think it's really funny. His quotes the other day,» Friedman said.

«I think there's a really good chance Doughty is going to be an L.A. King for life. I think the Kings know it. They love him. I think they will try and step up and give him the number that he wants. So I think it's more likely than not that he's going to stay in L.A..

But he says, I want to be paid more than P.K.. I want a big number. Yeah, I'm a London-area guy, so the Leafs would be interesting. And by the way, I'm going to talk to Erik Karlsson and we're going to compare notes.' Which they should, they're in the same agency and they're the two best defensemen available.»

Do you think Drew Doughty will become a free agent?
