Easton Cowan surprises many with his outlook on the possibility that he does not make the Leafs out of camp

Maple Leafs prospect Easton Cowan has not only grown physically over the past year, but he has also shown a great deal of maturity ahead of training camp.

Last fall, as an 18-year-old, Easton Cowan turned quite a few heads with his performance in his first NHL training camp and during pre-season play. In the end, Cowan stuck around until the final wave of cuts before being returned to the OHL's London Knights.

This year, not only has Cowan packed on some additional size, grown an inch in height and become stronger, but he's already maturing as a 19-year-old, as is evidenced by his comments about whether or not he'll be upset if he doesn't make the Leafs out of training camp.

"No, not really. I think I'm just going to give it my all. Play my game, do my thing. Just have fun out there. Be a happy kid, and I'll trust what they think they should do with me and just trust the process like I've always been doing."
-Cowan on his mindset for training camp

With Cowan having taken part in training camp last year, he's coming into this camp a lot more prepared that he was the last time around, which bodes well for his chances. What may complicate matters, though, is the presence of two veterans on PTOs in Max Pacioretty and Steven Lorentz, who, if signed, could block Cowan's path to the NHL this season.

Last season, Cowan dominated in the OHL, showing that he's ready to take the next step in his young career. After earning both regular season and playoff MVP honours, as well as an OHL championship, is there really much benefit to the Mount Brydges, Ontario native going back for another season? Yes and no.

Going back for another year in the OHL could help Cowan to continue on his body growth and the fine tuning of his skill set. However, since he'll be playing against players in his own age range again, would there be as much visible growth in terms of his actual skill set? Maybe, maybe not.

If Cowan can show during camp and the pre-season that he can play with poise and confidence against men, while exhibiting his tremendous work ethic and exciting skill set, then he'll likely make the team, even if it means someone else is moved to open up a roster spot. However, if he is sent back down, it's nice to know that he'll be mature about the decision and remain committed to the process.
