The Toronto Maple Leafs just had a significant amount of cap space open up following the latest update on goaltender Joseph Woll, signifying that a move could be on the way.

As the Toronto Maple Leafs continue their season, their start has been somewhat underwhelming, sitting at 3-3-1 after a 5-2 loss to the New Jersey Devils on Tuesday night.

Injury Bug Continues to Bite the Maple Leafs

Injuries have been a constant challenge for the Leafs this season. Most notably, Chris Tanev was placed on injured reserve after suffering an upper-body injury against the Devils on Tuesday before Morgan Rielly was also confirmed to have suffered an injury.
With these issues, the Leafs were forced to complete a few transactions, opening up a significant amount of cap space in the process.
As per PuckPedia on X:
"The #LeafsForever placed Joseph Woll on LTIR, gaining his $3.67M Cap Hit as space in LTIR.

After calling up Dakota Mermis, they have $3.63M cap space remaining in LTIR with 23 active players

LTIR: Woll, Rafai
IR: Tanev, Laughton"

Joseph Woll Placed on LTIR

The Maple Leafs have officially placed Joseph Woll and his $3.67 million cap hit on long-term injured reserve, meaning he will miss at least 10 games and 24 days.
Woll has yet to play a game this season and was a notable absence from training camp, having stepped away from the team on September 23rd. There has been little to no speculation about the nature of his absence, leaving fans and media alike in the dark.
Whatever Woll is dealing with, he'll be welcomed back with open arms when he returns. Over his five years in the organization, he's proven to be a key piece both on and off the ice.

What This Means for the Maple Leafs

With Woll's LTIR placement, the Maple Leafs now have $3.63 million in available cap space -- a much-needed boost at a crucial time. After a slow and inconsistent start to the season, this newfound flexibility could allow Toronto to make a roster move or trade to help spark the team.

What's Next for Toronto

The Maple Leafs will look to bounce back when they hit the road to face the Buffalo Sabres next. After a tough loss to the Devils, Toronto will aim to regroup and build some momentum in what's shaping up to be a competitive Atlantic Division battle.
